Basilio and Remus

Post by Axton on Wed Sep 28, 2016 4:12 pm

Basilio sits upon the throne, as he does every Monday, now. He leans on his palm, stifling a yawn at the mundane request of yet another merchant spurned by some raw deal with the neighboring country, the very one he is being pushed into a political marriage with. It would be yet another simple response of, next time get a contract in writing and have trade overseers around to make sure it all goes as planned. Otherwise, there is nothing he can do about it.

He shifts positions as the merchant leaves, seething and angry that there is nothing his king will do for him, but smart enough not to try anything with the large amount of guards hanging around.

Unfortunately for King Basilio, the next person was yet another merchant. With an "urgent matter", apparently. He sighed and slicked back his tightly curled hair. This was going to be yet another boring day of audience meetings of no consequence.

"Bring him in," Basilio ordered, trying to sit and look less bored than usual.

Two years. Two years since his brother was forced to kill him. Two long years of seeing himself in the mirror with disdain, distaste, with the pain of knowing his brother inflicted this wound on him. And yet every day he misses him more. So this new person, this dead man walking, this corpse deigns himself a new name. Fausto Castillo was killed in a succession duel his father was killed for trying to stop. Remus Acerbi is a different person. A stronger one, even without his eye and his dearest brother.

Of course, even being forced to let Basilio think of his brother as dead, Remus cannot accept that he cannot keep him safe even now. Not with what he's been hearing the assassin's guild muttering about.

He is brought in by a pair of guards, who looks rather tired of this routine, and he kneels before his--king. Simply his king.

"Hello, your highness. I come not with a request, but advice." He says. He prays idly that Basilio cannot recall his voice.

Basilio raises an eyebrow, immediately more interested. He leans forward on his throne.

"Oh, is that so?" he eyes the man in front of him but nothing out of the ordinary occurs to him. "Explain yourself, then."

"I am the eldest son of Giovanni Acerbi, Remus. I come to you because I have heard stirrings within the people of an attempt on your life. I would like nothing more than to serve my king and bring what I know to light." He rises from his kneel and meets his eyes with his, covered beneath an ornate mask one would wear to a salon. He wears the nicest set of clothing he owns, as well. If he must reintroduce himself to Basilio, then he will do it well.

Truth be told, Basilio wouldn't actually mind dying. But he no heirs, and no one to take the throne in the case of his death, and while the burden is great, he loves his country too much to vacate the throne.

The mask intrigues him, but it is not necessarily the proper time to inquire about it so he says nothing, but he eyes him suspiciously.

"And from where do these rumors come? I'm sure there are plenty who want me dead; I was not the popular choice for king," he says, very bitterly.

"I must say, you had my family's full support, your majesty." He says, honestly, though he can feel his brow furrowing behind his mask. It hurts. Physically and mentally. But he is not lying. "I have only heard whispers from the guild members who frequent my aunt's shop. But they have mentioned a lesser noble son as their employer. Carelessly, I might add." He smirks a little bit.

"Very carelessly," he agrees, smiling slightly. "Regardless, I should have this threat investigated. What other information can you give me, Ser Acerbi?"

"I have heard only one other thing; that the noble planned for them to strike at your upcoming salon." He says, his tone becoming much more serious."If I may offer my assistance... I could perhaps gather further information."

"Hmm," Basilio leans back on his throne, steepling his fingers. "Perhaps...we should discuss this in more detail in private."

He raises an eyebrow at the other man. "We can plan further, say, tonight?"

If he weren't speaking directly to a king, let alone a king who is his brother, he would surmise that to be flirtation. But the idea is far too far-fetched, so he solemnly nods to his king, and bows.

"Of course. This information is safer in private, my lord."

"Indeed," he says, and he smiles to him, a brief, and very familiar smile. "Meet me at eight o' clock sharp; the guards will be instructed to let you through to my private meeting chamber. Until then, Ser Acerbi."

He bows ever slightly in a polite manner.

That smile. God, he has missed that smile. It makes him smile in return and he nods firmly once more and tries to catch his breath at how utterly happy it makes him to see Basilio again as he walks away, escorted by the guards once more.

Throughout the day he bargains with a couple of members of the guild for further information on the hit. He doesn't find out much, but he does find the name of the nobleman responsible for the hit order. Lorenzo Albani, a young man who had quarreled with the princes before. Fausto laments idly that he had not taken him out when he had a chance, but supposes exposing him now will have to do.

He arrives at the palace ten minutes early.

Basilio is dressed in more casual attire now as he greets Remus, who has been led to the meeting room. There are no guards inside of the room, but there are two outside of either set of doors and two outside of the large window overlooking the large garden. The doors close behind Remus and they are alone together.

Basilio is seated at the head of the table in the room, legs crossed and fingers steepled.

"Hello again, Ser Acerbi," he says politely, and his smile is warm despite his exhausted eyes. "There is much to discuss."

Remus offers a smile in return, seating himself at the side of the king.

"Hello to you as well, your majesty. There is indeed." He offers, adjusting his satchel and resting it at the table, pulling loose a pair of scrolls. "I've spent my time today wisely in asking the guild members further details. I offer you what little I know." He hands the scrolls off.

Basilio flips through the scrolls as if he's not particularly concerned about the threat, which he isn't. Although, the name doesn't surprise it, it does cause him to furrow his brows. Lorenzo always was a thorn in his side, but this was taking it too far. But without any actual proof, he would look like quite the tyrant if he had him executed. Instead, he would have to find concrete proof and then expose him. He smiled, a cruel, bitter smile. This would, at least, be fun.

"I appreciate this very much," Basilio says honestly, and he sets down the scrolls. "But I do have to wonder; what do you expect to gain from me for this?" He cocks his head to the side, and that disingenuous smile is still on his lips. "I have to question your motivation for such an action," he explains, slowly, and levels his gaze with Remus'. "Riches, women...men," he quirks an eyebrow, never once lowering his gaze. "Or otherwise?"

"I..." He pauses, looking aside, feeling the dull pain in his right eye, and smiles faintly. "I do it simply to prolong your life, your majesty." He says, honestly, and keeps the smile on his lips.

"I am not motivated by greed, and never have been. Simply the stability of my family and my nation." And protecting him would do both neatly.

Basilio eyes him for a moment before he laughs without much humor.

"...Look, we are not in the presence of my guard, you do not need to lie to me," he says. "For this information you are giving me, I am willing to give you anything you desire."

"It would be... less embarrassing were I lying, my Lord." He admits somewhat sheepishly, looking aside from him. "I see you as a fit ruler. I'd rather not have any of those despots around you take power." And he knows firsthand how despicable all of them are; he is certain one espoused his father in the first place.

Basilio stares at him, openly bemused by this turn of events now. What was happening right now? Was this man serious? It was beyond anything he had dealt with in these past two years; a man who seemed honestly content to simply help him, free of charge. But he couldn't believe it; not again. He subconsciously reached to the back of his neck, and the scar tracing across the nape of his neck.

"...you understand why I cannot believe you," he says, slowly, trying to regain his grasp on the situation. "You really desire nothing? Absolutely nothing from me? I can give you anything you'd like; absolutely anything. Riches, a title of nobility and all of the perks that come with it, land, a castle, servants. Anything."

"I do understand. And... I cannot possibly request something from you. I understand your mistrust, but I cannot." He explains, folding his hands over. It takes him a moment before he raises his head once more. "...I... suppose a chance to work for you, my lord?" He knows it's not a very good idea to be so close to him, but the allure of being close with his dearest brother after so long is damnable.

Basilio meets his eyes, looking him over. This mysterious man really was trying to deeply confuse him, wasn't he?

"As an informant?" he asks, raising an eyebrow. "Or otherwise?"

"As an... adviser. I was forced to leave the watchers because of the loss of my eye two years ago, but I excelled at what I did." The leader of his watchers would vouch for him; he was the only member to know of his survival. "I can help you."

Basilio nods, smiling now. Of course. This must have been the man's game all along. Regardless, he could certainly allow this.

"If you thwart this attempt on my life, and you do it in such a way that gives me the proof I require in order to have Lorenzo executed, then I will certainly allow you to be my adviser."

Gods know his current board of advisers are all a worthless lot, anyway.

"I can do that easily, my lord." He smirks a little bit; it will be easy for him, but perhaps not for any other man. "The salon is soon, is it not? I suggest you set a point of guards around you during it. And do not partake in food or drink." He notes, furrowing his brow beneath the mask and crosses his arms over his chest.

Basilio scoffs at the thought.

"And how will I make that look natural, hm?" he suggests, raising an eyebrow. "I want to humiliate Lorenzo; I want him to think he's succeeded and then crush him."

He smiles, leaning back in his chair again.
