Fake Dating? Fake Dating.

Post by Axton on Wed Jun 15, 2016 10:19 pm

It was just to keep Balan off his back, that was all. Not that Mary was any better. At some point she'd managed to con Jude into giving her his number and she pestered him almost as much.

Alvin didn't have feelings for Jude...anymore. They were entirely a thing of the past, of a year ago. 26 year old Alvin made bad decisions, including falling hopelessly in love with the kid who had singlehandedly saved his life. A kid who was 15 nonetheless. So he had completely buried such thoughts and moved on with his life.

Until now. Until Balan and Mary decided that they would make a cute couple and hadn't stopped pestering the two of them until they did something about it. Most likely because Balan had managed to pry the information from a drunk and stupid Alvin at some point and had never let it go.

So Alvin had, stupidly, suggested a fake date as a means of keeping them from bothering them.

Which was an ingenious plan until Alvin realized that in order for it to work they'd need to actually go on a date together, because Balan was too clever not to notice if they hadn't.

So, Alvin stood in the doorway to Jude's lab in his nicest suit, ready to pick him up from work and escort him to dinner on that new train he had been drooling over getting to ride. Sure, it was a fake date but he might as well make it enjoyable for one of them.

"Almost done with work for today, Jude?" Alvin asked as he let himself in.

Balan, who was leaning over Jude's desk and looking over some papers, shot him the most devilish grin and Alvin immediately regretted the entire situation. Why did it feel like this was all according to some obscene plan he and Mary had cooked up?

Balan whistled at him, "Your nicest suit, Alfred? I'm impressed."

"Shut it," Alvin replied, frowning slightly. He wanted to say, this is all your fault, but figured he'd better now blow their cover just yet.

Well, it'd come down to this at last. Balan had found out he'd still had feelings for Alvin, even after a year, and Mary subsequently learned it, too. Of course, he wished they would never ever bring it up, ever again, but they immediately decided that they had to go out (because of course they did).

And it seemed they'd approached Alvin, too. That definitely made things harder, Jude thought, as he blatantly lied about how he felt to him. Telling the truth when Alvin insisted he didn't have feelings for him either was bound to end up badly, and besides; he was still way too young to even think about that. Well. That was the lie he told himself.

So when Alvin, insistent on not having feelings for Jude any longer (or ever, he claimed, but Jude knew better in that aspect at least) suggested a fake date, he agreed immediately to get the pair off their backs. That was a mistake.

So now he's in what are his nicest clothes, and sort of praying Alvin has something not horrible planned. Mary is grinning ear to ear when Alvin comes in, dressed shockingly well. Jude feels under-dressed.

He gapes for a second, because he didn't expect Alvin to be so genuine in his effort. He might be a little red.

"...Y-Yeah!" He says, nodding, trying to remember that it's not a real date. "Just one last thing."

"Sure," Alvin says and he leans against the doorway and straightens out the cuff of one of his sleeves.

Given Balan and Mary's horrendous grins he has a feeling that this might have been the desired outcome regardless of whether it was a 'real' date or not. Balan was such a pain in the ass, why did Alvin still agree to go drinking with him?

"You'd better hurry up or Alfred might just grab whatever random lady is nearest instead," Balan teased Jude as he swiped a few papers from his desk. "I think we can handle it without you for the rest of the day."

Alvin wanted to argue that he didn't do that sort of thing anymore but Balan was already giving him that look, the look that meant if Alvin tried anything he would be sure to spill something extra embarassing to Jude. So he snapped his mouth shut and waited quietly.

It isn't like he's not already used to Balan's 'jokes', but regardless he bristles just a little at the idea. Even if it did kind of hurt to imagine Alvin sleeping around, he knew it was baseless stuff anyways. Not because he felt jealous or anything. Nope.

He shelves that thought and shakes his head at Balan, hurrying the last touch on a piece of paperwork he'd been working on.

"Very funny. I'm not worried about you, I just wanted to make sure I didn't leave it open-ended." He explains, grabbing his jacket from the front of the lab. He heads to the exit, finally, holding the coat over his shoulder. "...S-Sorry to make you wait."

Great. The stutter again.

"No worries, kid," he smiles at him but it's already a bit weary from having to deal with Balan. "Shall we?" And he adds a silent, get away from my annoying cousin as soon as possible? to the end of that sentence.

Alvin links his arm with Jude's and looks down at him. "Just for Balan's benefit," he says quietly, as if it didn't make his palms feel unnaturally sweaty to touch Jude in such an intimate way. He waves a half heartedly goodbye to Balan and makes a quick escape from the lab.

"So, you'll never guess what I managed to get my hands on," he grins down at him, a surge of pride behind his words.

He's more than grateful to get out of the lab for once in his life. Even thinking about it makes him feel guilty, but knowing what he'd have to put up with staying there makes him feel a little better. Milla would understand completely, he thinks, almost sighing out loud.

Having his arm linked with Alvin, however, is a whole other beast. As soon as he speaks up, he feels his stomach flip-flop, the reality of the situation dawning on him.

"Huh? Oh. What did you find?" He asks, after a few seconds of thoughts on the matter.

Alvin unlinks their arms to reach into his suit and he hands Jude his train ticket.

"Had to pull a few strings, but I know how much you wanted to ride this new train, so, I figured since I was dragging you away from your work, you should enjoy it," he explains with a smile.

Jude's eyes go huge and he almost drops the ticket in shock.

"...How?!" He gapes, trying really hard to resist his urge to tug his arm violently. "How did you get this? They were fully booked!" He'd saved what little money he'd had to get a ticket and had ended up disappointed months ago. He'd almost completely forgotten about it until now. He immediately gets pretty sheepish.

"...thank you." He says, almost too softly to be heard. As if he wasn't already in love. This was going to be hard.

Alvin grins at how absolutely excited Jude is. It's more or less the exact reaction he was anticipating, and that was the entire reason he'd gotten his hands on these tickets. To see Jude's face light up like that.

Since Milla...it had been hard on all of them, but Jude had loved her. Been in love with her, probably. No, definitely.

Even if, and that was a huge if, Jude actually had feelings for him, even if no one else, especially not Leia, kicked his ass for it, even if all of it worked out, Alvin knew better than to compete with the Lord of Spirits herself. He would always take a backseat to Milla.

Another reason his irrelevant feelings needed to be filed away in that, admittedly large section of his brain where he kept unpleasant thoughts.

"You're very welcome," he says and he puts his hands in his pockets. "Just don't ask what I had to do to get my hands on these. You don't wanna know."

"Even if it was something stupid, I'm grateful. Seriously grateful." He says, honestly, and then he remembers their arms are still linked. He doesn't mind, really, but he worries about Alvin, so he clears his throat, softly, not quite urgently. "...Y-You don't have to hold my arm anymore. We're out of Helioborg."

He wishes he didn't feel obligated to give Alvin an out, but... if he didn't feel for him anymore, he wouldn't force him to. It was better he pretended to not be so absolutely utterly infatuated with him.

"Right," he says and carefully separates himself from Jude, all the while reminding himself about how he definitely doesn't have any real feelings for him anymore. "Sorry 'bout that. But you know Balan; he'd never believe it if I didn't showboat just a little bit."

Alvin hasn't seen Jude, not up this close and not alone, in what feels like forever. He's matured even more since last year and sometimes it's easy to forget about his age, which Alvin is all too eager to remind himself of as a detterant.

Sixteen.

He repeats it a few times until he's reasonably sure it's sunk in again.

He's only sixteen.

'But I don't mind if you held my hand, maybe.' He thinks quietly to himself, smiling just a little bit up to him. "No problem. He takes way more convincing than he should," is what he really says instead.

He won't lie and say it didn't hurt to tell him to let go.

"At least the 'date' will be fun, though. I hope you won't be bored." He says, smiling sort of weakly at him.

"Balan and Yurgen are always telling me that I need to get more into the Elympion spirit of things and enjoy our technological advances, so I guess this is that opportunity," he says, rubbing a hand over the beard he had recently grown. "Besides, you're there to keep me occupied, how bored could I get?"

He means it in an, you're always getting into trouble kind of way but the implication of it being taken another way isn't entirely lost on him after he says it and he lapses into silence.

The line isn't lost on him, and he turns slightly red.

"I guess you're right. I do manage to uh, busy myself a lot." It's embarrassing to admit it, but he's a do-gooder to the core. "...I'm really grateful, like, really." He can't help but repeat himself; he remembers the cost of those tickets pretty distinctly.

"Come on, it's not that extraordinary," he says but he remembers pretty clearly what he'd had to do to get them and it had involved more than one uncomfortable favor. "If it really bothers you, I'm sure you can find some way to repay me later."

He smiles at him and despite his self-imposed rule of 'absolutely no flirting', it had sort of happened anyway.

This night was going to be a nightmare.

Luckily, they had arrived in Trigleph and with the crowds around them it already felt less intimate. Alvin breathed a slight sigh of relief.

"It's pretty extraordinary." He gently punches his shoulder, more a nudge than an actual punch. "I'll think about it."

The crowds by the station were pretty large, and while he did feel just a little bit better about the whole thing, he also wound up feeling the claustrophobia set in as soon as they stepped inside. The crowds were there for the train's ceremonial start, but he still couldn't stifle the worry in the back of his head. Sooner or later, he wound up grasping Alvin's jacket as they got to the ticket-taker.

"Need me to hold your hand?" He smirks at him in what he hopes is clearly a joking manner. "I'll admit, I didn't really realize this train was that big of a deal."

In retrospect, those favors were staring to seem not so bad for what was probably going to be quite the luxurious dinner.

"No... just don't push me off... okay? I'll be fine." He tries his hardest to make the words clear, but it's obvious he's not a fan of the crowds. "Yeah... it's a pretty big release." He explains, though he's still clinging tight to his arm.

"I don't remember if I told you, but tickets sold out maybe... three or four days after opening." As soon as they board, he takes in a deep breath and almost immediately feels better.

"Really?" He really didn't realize it was such a big deal. He might still owe Yurgen some favors for this one. And all for a fake date with a person he was beginning to suspect he might maybe still have feelings for.

The train was beyond beautiful. The architecture was splendid and it very nearly reminded him of the Zenethra, if not a bit more modern. They really had outdone themselves with this one, likely in an attempt to show off to Reize Maxians in the process, but even so, it was quite the train.

Alvin led Jude to their seats, which he discovered to be a small but luxurious room with a foldable dining table and a bright, beautiful chandelier. Truly romantic.

"Wow. I'm beginning to see what Balan sees in Elympios design," he admits as he sits down.

Jude's got stars in his eyes at the sight of the interior design of the train. Certainly, he'd enjoyed other trains, but even with what little he knew about this one beforehand it still surprised him with how elegant the whole place is.

"...Alvin, it's ten times better than I thought it was going to be." He says, feeling his eyes almost well up with tears. "...I really mean it when I say thank you. I seriously didn't think I'd ever get to ride an actual liner." He admits, as he sits down, looking up to the chandelier. His money troubles were no secret to any of his friends, but admitting it still made him feel ashamed.

Alvin feels his chest tighten for a moment and pretends it's just because he isn't entirely sure what to say.

"It's...no big deal, honestly," he reassures him for what feels like the hundredth time. "Just try to enjoy yourself. We don't even have to pretend it's a date anymore, so you can relax."

Unless, he thinks to himself, unless you'd like to.

But he keeps those sentiments to himself.

What if I want to, he thinks, his brow furrowed tight, but he tries to shake it off and smile instead.

"You say that, but seriously, I... don't know that I could really ever pay you back for this." He rubs his neck in thought. "...For a fake date, it's... really a lot."

Maybe it means something else, he thinks, his heart pounding. But it could also just mean nothing.

Alvin was beginning to think he might have overdone it a little bit. Was it too much? Maybe Jude was thinking he had real feelings for him, and he reminded himself that he didn't, and that 26 year old Alvin needed to stop trying to assist in his decision making processes. He didn't want to give him the wrong impression, but he also didn't want Jude to think he didn't care.

"Just try to think of it as your best friend in the entire world treating you to a night off from work, 'kay?" He says. "Even you need a break sometimes."

The thought is still on his mind but he pushes it down, knowing that he really shouldn't get his hopes up.

"...I guess you're right. But..." He stops himself and shakes his head, running a hand through his hair. "You're right. Breaks are... hard, knowing everyone is counting on us. So even if I seem like I'm not grateful for a distraction, I am. It's just difficult not to worry about the research." When she gave up so much for us, he thinks, and he knows Alvin would be able to tell from his expression.

Alvin frowns slightly and he tries not to think of Milla. It was painful, in so many ways. Losing her, then losing her again so shortly afterwards. He hadn't known what to do with himself. If not for Yurgen, who knows...

He takes a breath and pushes it from his mind. This is about Jude right now.

"I know" he says after a moment and he rests a hand on Judes shoulder. "But if you run yourself ragged you'll never make progress. You need a break sometimes, too."
